Green car targets 'a long way off'
The motor industry reduced its carbon dioxide emissions by just 1.16 per cent during 2007, green campaigners have claimed.
According to research by cleangreencars.co.uk, the average emission rate was 164.39 g/km of CO2 from each car.
The European Union emissions targets aim for each car to emit no more than 140 g/km by the end of 2008, however, the research suggests that at this rate, such a target may not be achieved until 2021.
Jay Nagley, publisher of cleangreencars.co.uk, said: "The depressing figures for 2007 show how far the industry still has to go. While lots of money is being spent on high-tech research, we need to see tangible results."
Research published in October by the website found that CO2 emissions reduced by just 0.8 per cent in the first nine months of 2007.
